Ground Turkey!!!!

I have found a miracle! I've been watching The Biggest Loser and heard the trainers on there tell the contestants that ground turkey is a lot better for you than ground beef. So, I decided to try it out since I've been trying to watch what I eat lately. We had meximelts the other night for dinner with the ground turkey, and they were delicious! Of course I added a bunch of spices to the meat, but I thought that it tasted better than ground beef. It's not nearly as greasy (ground beef tends to hurt my stomach but this turkey didn't) and get this......it's cheaper than ground beef!! It's a miracle! I haven't tried the ground turkey in any other dishes so I might change my mind, but for now it will be a regular item that I will be purchasing from the grocery store. I still have about a half of a pound left, so the main reason that I am blogging about this is because I was wondering if anyone has any good recipes that call for ground beef besides spaghetti, tacos, or meatloaf. Please let me know if you do, and if you would rather email it to me, that would be fine!!!!

P.S. Mom-I lost that pirate sandwich recipe......I might have to get that again from you.

Jake and I switched to ground turkey about 3 months ago and haven't touched ground beef since. I agree, it's just as tasty, less greasy and so much healthier. As for recipes, I can't help you. Spaghetti and tacos are pretty much the only meals I make that call for ground meat. Let me know if you get any great recipes.

PS we also switched to whole wheat pasta. You should try it if you haven't yet. It's pretty good.

I'm totally with you. I LOVE ground turkey...and turkey sausage. The sausage still isn't great for you, but it's a good substitute if you're going to have sausage anyways. I make stroganoff, turkey burgers, chili/taco soup and lasagna/manicotti a lot with the ground turkey. I also like to make lentil soup and quiche with 1/2 ground turkey and 1/2 turkey sausage. Sorry I don't have any real recipes. I generally only use a recipe once and remember it well enough to make it again. If you really are deperate, I can probably make one up for you :) I'm sure you can find some good ones at allrecipes.com.

I'll have to try that! We do a lot of ground beef cause it is so cheap - but if the turkey is cheaper and healthier? Hmm...

Shepherd's Pie is an easy one... Layer ground beef, green beans, then a can of tomato soup, mashed potatoes and top with cheddar cheese. 350 for about 20 minutes... yum! And so quick! Especially with the potato pearl things... they are the best!

You could just cook it up with a little onion and freeze it. Then add it to your recipes when you need it. I'll have to get me some more ground turkey. I kind of forgot about it... thanks for the reminder.

Its so funny that you just discovered this because I just did too about a month ago.Safeway had a sale on it and I bought 8lbs of it.I love it too, it has such a clean taste about it.I make turkey burgers with it.I add a package of lipton onion soup mix to it and grill it on my George Foreman grill.

We LOVE ground turkey. We got into it when we lived with Marc's parents. And I've always liked Turkey Burgers. It really is so much healthier and it tastes just as good, if not better! We normally do tacos, or fajita style, meatloaf, taco salad. Those are the regulars. But one night I did them meat and potatoe style, where I cubed and cooked red potatoes and onions with them, and it was really good. And we've also put left overs on top of a baked potatoe or something. You really can do anything with it. I substitute it for chicken entree's sometimes too.
Good find! P.S. I love watching The Biggest Loser. I have it DVR'd every week so I don't miss it!

Craig ate ground turkey for about 90% of his mission in Russia, because they weren't allowed to eat with the members (too many people were getting sick) and ground turkey was the only meat shipped in from the US and therefore, safe. So he was a little weary when I wanted to start cooking a little bit with it, but, I found some really good recipes on Rachel Ray's website. She's huge on ground turkey because she likes to cook healthy. We tried a few of them and he actually liked them alot! You should try some of hers, they are always interesting.

OK, I thought I left a comment yesterday but it hasn't shown up. I said that be careful to check the fat content of turkey because it frequently is higher than the lowfat ground beef. I thought I was eating better too one time and then saw that the turkey was 20% fat and the ground beef from Costco was 10% fat. If you get the ground turkey breast (which is the leanest of all) then that is definitely the healthiest but also the most expensive. If you want the pirate sandwiches, I'll e mail them to you. :)
